The hardest interview question I've ever been asked was, "why do you love writing?"

At the risk of sounding saccharine, it's like asking me why I love my wife. We writers love to wax lyrical about a reality that's often stranger than fiction... But in my experience, at least, words usually fall short of truly naming the things we couldn't imagine living without.

And so, I'll stick to the facts: The two things that make me tick are telling stories, and making my community a better place.

My first published byline was in my middle school newspaper (a thrilling exposé on the new knitting club). That led to newspaper and model gov in high school, which led to spoken word poetry and policy internships in undergrad. Through it all, I thought I was bound for law school (because that's what high-achieving, middle-class kids who aren't good at math or science do, right?).

...Until a fateful conversation with a very insightful professor, who asked me what I actually wanted to do in my day-to-day after graduation. And as soon as I put pen to paper to write that list, I realized that I just couldn't imagine a life without some kind of creative storytelling at its center!

Since then, I've dabbled in everything from freelance reporting and documentary filmmaking, to nonprofit philanthropic work, and even a stint at a think tank. And that breadth of experience has made me who I am as a multimedia storyteller.

My approach in a nutshell...

  • No one has a right to other people's attention. The start and soul of engaging content is a story people can connect to.

  • Good stories deserve to be thoughtfully crafted and strategically shared. A video can have "scrappy" production value and still be compelling, as long as every second has a reason to be there.

  • No one has a right to tell someone else's story. I try to treat my story subjects as respected collaborators and experts on their lives.

  • Stories are care, distilled. Authentic creative work is both life-giving and emotionally draining. So before you even start, find the "why" that will keep you going.
